The Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service is investigating a two-alarm fire Saturday night that caused about $1 million in damage to a furniture store on Flower Avenue in Silver Spring, according to officials.

In addition to the fire, responding MCFRS crews and police officers found a woman nearby suffering an “unknown” injury, police spokesperson Casandra Tresler told MoCo360 on Monday.

Police officers were dispatched to the 8500 block of Piney Branch Road for the report of a fire, and upon arrival located the injured woman, Tresler said. The woman was transported to a local hospital in serious condition. Police are investigating how she became injured.

The blaze, which broke out at around 11 p.m. at Casa Furniture at 8701 Flower Ave., displaced two adults who escaped unharmed from a basement dwelling of the building, according to Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service (MCFRS) Assistant Chief Public Information Officer David Pazos.

MCFRS crews were dispatched to the intersection at Flower Avenue at 11:15 p.m. on Saturday and were “met with a heavy from the rear of the furniture store,” Pazos told MoCo360 Tuesday.

“Because [MCFRS crews] knew of it being a furniture store, they requested a second alarm, which brought an another additional alarm to the scene, as well as some ancillary support resources,” Pazos said.

MCFRS Chief Public Information Officer Pete Piringer wrote on social media the fire caused about $600,000 in damage to the building and $300,000 to the contents of the store.

After the fire was extinguished, firefighters determined the blaze originated in a storage room near bay windows in the building, Piringer said.
