As ground crews from the Montgomery County parks department mowed the deep green grass Wednesday morning at Nolte Local Park in downtown Silver Spring, the only signs of a fatal shooting that occurred there Sunday night were yellow crime scene tape in a trash can and bouquets of flowers that had been placed in the center of a basketball court.
The flowers paid tribute to the two 20-year-old victims, identified Tuesday by Montgomery police as Quincy Johnson of Takoma Park, Md., and D’Andre Wint of Lanham.
The shooting was reported at approximately 6:57 p.m. Sunday at the park at 200 Denver Road, police said Tuesday afternoon in a statement. A statement released Sunday had described the shooting as occurring in the 500 block of Thayer Avenue.
Upon arrival, officers located Johnson and Wint, who were each suffering from gunshot wounds. The officers performed lifesaving efforts but Johnson and Wint were pronounced dead at the scene, the statement said.
Police don’t have any suspects in custody and the investigation is ongoing, the statement said.
The families of the two men have launched fundraisers to raise money for funeral expenses.
As of Wednesday morning, a GoFundMe campaign launched by Heidi Martin, Johnson’s mother, had collected nearly $22,500, more than double its goal of $10,000.
“I am wordless, trying to find a way to share that my son Quincy has passed,” Martin wrote. “He is a brilliant light, he had a confused mind. His family and friends poured [their] love into him while he was here.”
A GoFundMe fundraiser for Wint’s family had raised $22,000 of its $30,000 goal.
“A beautiful soul that has filled all of our lives with love and joy is now gone,” the campaign page says. “To truly know Dre, was to know light and love. He had the most infectious smile and laugh and lit up our hearts with his presence. He had a heart of gold and so much more life to live. Our family is in shreds, heartbroken, and trying to comprehend how we will continue life without him.”
