State Del. Aruna Miller has secured the support of Montgomery County Executive Ike Leggett in her bid for the 6th District congressional seat.
Miller’s campaign announced Monday Leggett endorsed the Darnestown Democrat in the race in which she’s facing off against Democratic competitors including Total Wine & More co-owner David Trone and state Sen. Roger Manno (D-Silver Spring).
Miller has been a delegate since being elected in 2010. She previously worked as a Montgomery County transportation engineer.
“In the years that I have known her, she has had an exemplary commitment to the people of Montgomery County and has dedicated herself to serving every individual she represents,” Leggett said in a statement. “Her record of votes and constituent services demonstrate that she is the right person for the job.”
Leggett’s backing of Miller comes one week after Trone announced he was endorsed by Prince George’s County Executive Rushern Baker in the congressional race. Baker, a leading contender for the Democratic gubernatorial nomination this year, was endorsed by Leggett in the governor’s race last month. Leggett and Baker have a relationship dating back to when Baker was a student at Howard University Law School in Washington, D.C., in the 1980s and Leggett was a dean and professor at the school.
Miller, Manno and Trone are also facing off against Army veteran Andrew Duck, pediatrician Nadia Hashimi and aerospace executive Christopher Hearsey in the June 26 Democratic primary.
They’re running for the seat now occupied by Democratic Rep. John Delaney, who is running for president. Maryland’s 6th District stretches north from Potomac through Frederick County and includes the state’s western panhandle.
In a statement, Miller thanked Leggett for his endorsement. “I am lucky enough not only to have him as my county executive, but also as a mentor, my former boss and my friend. Ike’s leadership has inspired me in my own public service career,” she said.
