A trash truck caught fire and dumped its contents onto the Beltway Inner Loop around 9:15 a.m. Monday near the Colesville Road exit in Silver Spring.
Firefighters closed all lanes on the inner loop for about 30 minutes to extinguish the fire and provide space so the trash could be cleaned up. A traffic camera showed fire crews positioned behind the incident around 9:30 a.m. with trash spread across two travel lanes and the breakdown lane.
Montgomery County’s Emergency Management Department warned drivers to expect delays and seek an alternate route around the incident, which had traffic backed up into Bethesda.
By 9:45 a.m. one lane of the inner loop had reopened and some traffic was getting by. About 30 minutes later crews had cleared the trash from the roadway and reopened all travel lanes on the highway.
