Shaw moved to Rockville more than a decade ago and is a community leader, policymaker and an advocate, per her campaign website. She is a federal employee for the National Institutes of Health leading communications and outreach projects focused on advancing cancer research and health equity. For the City of Rockville, she served as a commissioner on the Charter Review Commission. According to Shaw, she co-founded a coalition to help pass the Montgomery County Racial Equity and Social Justice Act and was involved in organizing the coalition that helped to pass rent stabilization legislation in the county.
