Yamil Hernández

Yamil Hernández

Yamil Hernández, 46, has lived in Gaithersburg for seven years and has worked on the Animal Control Board and Business Development Committee for the city, according to his candidate profile. He served on the U.S. Coast Guard and is now the chief business officer and co-founder of ExeGi Pharma, a life sciences company based in Rockville.

Why are you running for this position?

I want to give back and make Gaithersburg the very best place it can be. Gaithersburg is special to me. This is where I met my wife, built my business, made my home, and found belonging. I want folks to have the same access to opportunities that I had and more. Helping people is one of the most fulfilling things we can do, and I hope to do so on the Council.

What makes you the best candidate (qualities, attributes, experience, skills, etc.)?

My life journey, background, skill set, and passion for service all make me uniquely well suited: son of immigrants, life science entrepreneur, coast guard officer, and community activist, to name a few. This equips me with a special perspective and understanding, making me ideally positioned to represent and address the diverse needs and challenges of our community.

What would be three priorities for you if elected?

SHORT / IMMEDIATE TERM – would have to be shoring up Public Safety. This is the number one concern residents voice when I meet with them. It doesn’t help that the County Police Department (which handled approximately 4,200 calls for service annually for us) is abandoning Gaithersburg, and that load now will have to be carried solely by the City’s Police.

MEDIUM / LONG TERM – Lakeforest mall redevelopment.  It is a game changing opportunity to revitalize this important part of the city.  We have to get this right, and make it exceptional.

ONGOING – Continue to improve city service levels, responsiveness, transparency, and accountability.

What is the most important issue happening in the city, and how do you plan to address it?

Public Safety! Find funds to make up the shortfall caused by the County’s departure of Police Services to the City. The Police department will need to staff up accordingly.

What is the best aspect of the city and how will you enhance it?

One aspect the City shines is in public works (PW). I have personally sent emails to PW to which I get prompt acknowledgements, and rapid resolutions. From snow plowing to light pole repairs, I think our PW department is one of the best.  While knocking doors and speaking to residents, I hear similar positive experiences. An example below:

By the way, you too can help keep Gaithersburg looking great! if you see something that needs fixing, their email is publicworks@gaithersburgmd.gov. One way to improve is by having simpler ways for residents to submit and track issues (e.g., CRM system)

In July, the County Council passed the rent stabilization bill, which will go into effect in Spring 2024. However, Gaithersburg is exempt from the law. Where do you stand on the issue of implementing rent stabilization in your city?

Steep rent increases are an urgent concern for residents and I deeply empathize with the challenges they face when confronted with double digit increases. Additionally, we must consider the unintended consequences of rent control/stabilization, such as halted development (limiting future consumer options), actual decrease of rental housing, and potential reduced property maintenance. Robust rental assistance and workforce development programs are immediate tools we have to alleviate housing costs. If elected, my aim is to pursue a balanced, data-driven approach, considering all factors and weighing the pros/cons. A careful approach ensures we tailor the most effective solutions for our city.

Lastly, a fun question: Where is your favorite place to grab a bite to eat/favorite recreation place in Gaithersburg?

My wife likes to joke and say that I have visited/frequented every place that sells coffee in Gaithersburg! I’ve also started cycling more throughout the city to try and lose a few lbs., hit new coffee shops, and get around town. As for recreation, it’s hard to beat the city’s events (yes it’s a little brown nosing, but also true). Just enjoyed Oktoberfest—what a blast! Plus, the Gaithersburg Book Festival and Summerfest never disappoint.
