Omodamola Williams

Williams, 36, is a five-year Gaithersburg resident and a community activist who helped advocate for the passing of rent stabilization in the county, states his candidate profile. He is a board member of Young People for Progress and is now a community organizer for the Montgomery County Racial Equity Network.

Why are you running for this position?

I am deeply invested in the well-being of our community. As a concerned father and community activist, I’ve witnessed the challenges our residents face firsthand. I believe it’s crucial to address these issues and ensure that our city provides equitable opportunities for all. My experience as an advocate and community organizer, along with my personal understanding of these challenges, compels me to work towards a better Gaithersburg for everyone.

What makes you the best candidate (qualities, attributes, experience, skills, etc.)

I am the best candidate because of my deep community roots, advocacy experience, and direct policy involvement. My commitment to equity, my ability to work with diverse groups, and my track record of successfully advocating for change on the county level, uniquely qualify me to represent and serve the people of Gaithersburg.

What would be three priorities for you if elected?

My top priorities as an elected official will be to champion creative affordable housing solutions, foster mental health programs, and enhance city infrastructure for improved safety and accessibility.

What is the most important issue happening in the city, and how do you plan to address it?  What is the best aspect of the city and how will you enhance it?

The most pressing issue facing our city is the need for affordable housing. My plan to address it is by meeting with members of the community and working with the government to create policies and amendments that benefit everyone. Achieving this requires embracing the principles of open government.

Additionally, I appreciate the beautiful walking paths our city offers, but there are instances where these paths lead to literal dead ends. To enhance these paths and improve safety, I propose the installation of street lamps along these routes. Furthermore, we should work towards making these paths fully connected and accessible, eliminating any dead ends. This will ensure that residents can enjoy these amenities more effectively and safely.

In July, the County Council passed the rent stabilization bill, which will go into effect in Spring 2024. However, Gaithersburg is exempt from the law. Where do you stand on the issue of implementing rent stabilization in your city?

The city of Gaithersburg has a large percentage of renters that need to be protected, Gaithersburg definitely needs its own version of rent stabilization and I fully support finding what works for the city.

Lastly, a fun question: Where is your favorite place to grab a bite to eat/favorite recreation place in Gaithersburg?

There are so many wonderful places to eat and enjoy in our community that I find it very difficult to select just one. If I had to choose for myself, it would be the Cinnabon in Rio. My daughters really enjoy when I take them to the McDonalds on Quince Orchard Road and they love the playground on the Rio Boardwalk.
