Why are you running for this office?

Having been a Montgomery County sheriff deputy for eight years, I have an understanding of what’s working, what changes are needed, and areas of opportunity to better serve the county and my fellow residents.

What is the most important issue in this race and what specific plans do you have to address it?

We have to do a better job of engaging Montgomery County residents to ensure they feel safe in their communities. Next, I would create a commission to ensure best practices amongst new and senior deputies in the office. Finally, I would focus on creating partnerships with other agencies and community organizations to ensure the office is meeting the needs of the community.

What experience (work, political or other) has prepared you to hold this office?

I have spent my entire life preparing for this opportunity as I received my bachelor’s degree in criminal justice and spent eight years as a Montgomery County sheriff’s deputy. Additionally, I have owned a security company for the last eight years so I not only have the experience in public but the private sector as well.

Why are you running for this office?

I have decided to run as your next sheriff because I want to be a part of the positive change in Montgomery County’s law enforcement. I have made Montgomery County my adopted home, having raised my family, to include two adult children, in the county. I have worked for the sheriff’s office for 28 years, working my way up from a deputy sheriff I to the chief deputy (the second in command to the sheriff) and feel I am the most qualified candidate.

What is the most important issue in this race and what specific plans do you have to address it?

The Sheriff’s Office, along with other law enforcement agencies, are facing the challenge of recruiting and hiring qualified, diverse applicants. As an Asian-American, I feel that I possess a unique perspective that will assist in providing outreach to residents of the County. In my role as chief deputy, I often conduct presentations on the public safety role of the Sheriff’s Office to many diverse groups within the County. The need for properly trained law enforcement officers (deputies) is also priority for me. I would ensure that relevant, ongoing training that stresses de-escalation is provided through entry level and in-service classes.

What experience (work, political or other) has prepared you to hold this office?

As the current chief deputy (colonel) of the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, I oversee the daily operations of the four divisions of the Sheriff’s Office, to include the Family Justice Center on behalf of Sheriff Popkin. Over the course of my 28-year career within the Sheriff’s Office, I have had the opportunity to serve in every division of the Sheriff’s Office, with a significant tenure assigned to the Training Section. I work with stakeholders daily both within and outside county government to ensure effective law enforcement operations. This substantial experience within the Sheriff’s Office has prepared me to be your next sheriff.
