What advice would you offer for women just starting out?

Pave your way in your style; don’t be afraid to experiment with who you are—or are not—as a lawyer. Learn from others without trying to be like them and find what advocacy style best suits you. The greatest advocates are not the loudest or smartest, but those who are most prepared and in tune with themselves, and their client’s story. So, don’t just study the facts, records and caselaw, listen to your clients. Understand their unique stories, both objectively and subjectively—see things through your clients’ eyes—to most effectively align yourself with their long-term needs.

What was a major turning point in your life and/or career?

Having my son, who has Down Syndrome, in 2003. My life perspective and rules were redefined and reshaped—for the better, I’d discover. I learned about my own strength, and that in the face of adversity, I can accomplish anything I set my mind to. With humility of circumstance comes gratitude for the small, incremental achievements. My son has not only brought new positive light to our family, but to my work in cases involving children with special needs—I can apply my experiences to better understand and help clients with similar families.

How are you preparing for changes or innovations in your industry?

I recently developed the concept for a divorce app called ‘My Divorce Journey,’ that is in testing with a provisional patent and expected for release in 2020. There is an app for everything, so why not for divorce? This app will streamline the divorce process by giving users (anyone in the United States) the tools and resources to start and manage their divorce and manifest their future.
