How do I choose the right contractor for my project?
The old adage of getting three estimates and chooing the one in the middle doesn’t work as effectively with larger design-based projects. Your best option is to go with a reputable company that can provide certificates of insurance and is not afraid to provide you a full list of references of all their customers—not just the good ones. Obviously, check licenses, insurance and reviews, but the interview is the most important piece of your research. You want a partner when it comes to large projects, not a salesman. Have questions ready to ask that address your concerns.
We always recommend meeting with multiple companies, but it is not about estimates but instead about interviewing the company and finding the company that has processes and procedures in place that fit your expectations, vision, timeline and, of course, budget.
How do you handle those unknown behind-the-scenes obstructions that may create setbacks on the project?
This is where we feel most contractors and homeowners make a big mistake: Rushing to get to construction as soon as possible and normally prematurely.
The most import phase of construction is development and planning. It’s not just design, but also inspecting the home, checking the infrastructure and understanding all the costs that will be involved to complete the project on time and on-budget. There can always be a surprise or two, but experience and proper planning can avoid major surprises and budget overruns.
House to Home Solutions offers design/build projects like additions, whole-house remodels, kitchens, bathrooms and basements with a concierge level of service.
