What has been the most significant change in real estate over the course of your career?

That’s a great question. It would be easy to say technology but I don’t know that tech has had as much of an impact on our industry as people like to say. Sure, it’s a new way of searching and staying in touch and it speeds up transactions, but being a Realtor is more about people than search engines. How homes feel, and where and how we find value is what really matters.

What I find remarkably different now than when I began my career is the general expectation that every aspect of a property be absolutely current. “Instagram-ready,” as I like to tell my sellers. Predictably, and despite TV fixer-upper shows, the delta between what it costs to buy an “updated” home and what it costs to get it there has never been higher. That’s a huge change from the beginning of my career when people­—young people particularly—were all looking for homes with the potential for sweat equity.

People today want turnkey, move-in ready homes. My job is to respect that—and still find the value.

What brings you the most satisfaction in your work?

Without question it’s working with clients during major life transitions, such as first-time buyers, unexpected family events, and particularly downsizing seniors. I love taking the time to help people imagine best case outcomes—and accepting the challenge to get them there! Sometimes there are trade-offs, and often options that were not immediately obvious; but regardless, it’s fun to really get to know people and then apply my experience to their unique situation.
