Roohi Mozumder and her son Bobby own and operate Mela, a retail store specializing in apparel, jewelry and accessories from India, Pakistan and Bangladesh. Mela, meaning “festival,” opened in 2019 as a monthly South Asian bazaar for the Washington, D.C. area. In 2023, they turned their bazaar concept into a full-time store on the lower level of Montgomery Mall across from Forever 21, adjacent to the children’s playground.
Roohi, an expert seamstress, crafts custom sari blouses and alters bridal dresses. The family’s apparel expertise began with Roohi’s father, who owned and operated bazaars in Bangladesh filled with hundreds of stores. Mela is now the largest South Asian apparel retailer in the Washington, D.C. area, with thousands of customers up and down the east coast.
