Q In what kinds of cases are you appointed by the court to serve as a best interest attorney to represent children?
A When judges decide whether to appoint a best interest attorney (BIA), they consider several factors. Sometimes one of the parties requests a BIA. In general, this happens when the needs of a child require investigation or advocacy. Considerations are a high level of conflict; history of inappropriate adult influence or manipulation; past or current child abuse or neglect; physical or mental health problems of a child, parent or guardian; unusual educational concerns; actual or threatened family violence; alcohol or drug abuse; a pending relocation. Any other relevant factor could prompt a judge to appoint a best interest attorney. I have been honored to serve as one.
