Best Shop for Women in Their 40s and Up

Julia Farr

Two years ago, Julia Farr decided to ditch her 17-year career as a corporate attorney and follow her real passion—fashion. The sixth-generation Washingtonian not only has a great eye for style, she also understands the needs of her clientele. “Most of my customers are in their 40s and 50s, with busy, complex lives,” she says. Farr, 46, dresses them in fashion-forward designers such as Rachel Roy, Catherine Malandrino and ADAM by Adam Lippes. She also sells handbags and jewelry by local designers. Most recently, she partnered with friend Ann Tierney Prochnow to launch a collection inspired by various D.C. landmarks. The line features classic pieces like the Trinity top (after the cathedral) and the Jefferson jacket. Prices for the made-in-America pieces range from about $180 to $375. If you’re not sure what looks good on you, Farr can give her opinion on the spot, or come to your home and help you build a wardrobe from the ground up. Good style must run in the family: Farr’s elegant mother is a regular customer.
