My Best Friend’s Closet
Savvy moms can avoid the high decibels and high prices of popular teen mall haunts by taking their fashion-hungry kids to My Best Friend’s Closet in Rockville. In addition to finding the trendy fashions they crave, teens and tweens can get a lesson in economics. Opened in 2010 by Potomac moms Susan Olan and Cheryl Rhodes, the resale shop buys gently used clothing—mostly party dresses and denim—for cash or a store gift card. During homecoming season and most Saturdays, Olan says the store is packed. “You have to stand in line for a dressing room,” she says. The store has expanded to include a wide array of items, such as tops and jackets, all for under $100. But dresses for bat mitzvahs and homecoming are its specialty. “Moms come in here after a trip to the mall and love our prices,” Olan says. On a recent visit, we spotted a gently used Do & Be party dress for $24, a BCBG for $70 and a Jessica McClintock frock for $68 that still had the original $195 price tag.
