Best Green Builder

Douglas Construction Group

When Doug Monsein founded the Douglas Construction Group in the late 1990s, he felt as if he’d found his calling. Certainly the awards he has racked up since would suggest he was right.

Just last year, the Maryland-National Capital Building Industry Association awarded the company gold in the “Custom Home 3,500-5,000 Square Feet” category of its annual competition.

A focus on quality building eventually propelled Monsein into the “green” arena. He has built dozens of eco-friendly homes in the area in the last five years or so.

“We covertly advocate for our clients,” says Monsein, who steers clients toward such cost-effective measures as insulation that far exceeds building code requirements.
Client Eric Forseter says Douglas’ standard insulation package offers an impressive improvement over more traditionally constructed houses. That became abundantly evident last January when a snowstorm knocked out the power in the family’s new home. Temperatures dropped a mere 2 degrees in 24 hours, compared to a 12-degree plunge after an outage in their old townhouse the winter before.

“It’s unbelievable the difference in energy and heating bills, too,” Forseter says. His new home is roughly twice as big as the old one but costs half as much in utility bills.
