The “Mother-in-Law” at Range
Like its namesake, this cocktail is perhaps best enjoyed in small doses. Basing it on an 1890s recipe from New Orleans, Range beverage director Owen Thomson perfectly augments Old Fitzgerald Bottled in Bond bourbon with maraschino, bitters and curacao for a concoction that’s not as sweet as you might think. Then he gives the presentation a special twist.
Spearheading the new trend of pre-mixing and bottling cocktails, the Friendship Heights restaurant sends the “Mother-in-Law” to your table in a diminutive glass bottle that looks like it’s straight out of a 19th-century apothecary shop, complete with a homespun label affixed with twine. “The drink was originally made in a decanter in advance, which is why we serve it in the small glass bottles,” Thomson says.
Just pour the concoction over the mammoth cube of ice in your cocktail glass and enjoy. But don’t say we didn’t warn you—these beauties, which will set you back $12, pack a punch!
