Best Breakfast

The Original Pancake House

Take a break from your Atkins Diet, tuck a napkin into your collar, and get down on a maple syrup-drenched short stack.

Nearly 20 varieties vie for your stomach’s affection here, including griddle cakes packed with blueberries, bacon or pecans (prices vary). But the perennial favorite at the Bethesda and Rockville outposts, which opened more than two decades ago, is the oven-baked apple pancake ($10.75). The thick flapjack bursts with sautéed, soft Granny Smith slices and is drizzled with an autumn-evoking cinnamon glaze. The sumptuous circles helped the restaurants earn the 2008 award for “Best Pancakes,” as well as “Best Place for Breakfast” honors in 2007.

If you’re not in the mood for pancakes, opt for waffles, crêpes, French toast or eggs.
