FFYF advocates for greater federal investment in quality early childhood education (ECE), and seamlessly and purposefully integrates policy, communications and government relations in all aspects of its work. The Press Secretary will promote FFYF’s position in the media as the leading advocacy voice in the ECE field, developing and implementing a robust earned media strategy with an eye toward maintaining ECE as a popular bipartisan issue among voters and elected officials alike. The Press Secretary will report to the Communications Director and will also work closely with members of the Government Affairs and Policy teams to proactively identify earned media opportunities for the organization or ECE in general for national and other targeted media markets, while also facilitating a skilled rapid response operation.


  • Drive FFYF’s position in the media as the leading advocacy voice in the early childhood education space and help further promote the Executive Director’s brand as an expert and thought leader on the issue nationally
  • Organize, prepare, and staff the Executive Director and other senior staff for interviews, press events, and speaking opportunities
  • Produce and/or oversee the production of press materials, including releases, reports, fact sheets, and memos
  • Create and distribute talking points, messaging and other innovative communications based on research and policy analysis
  • Monitor media coverage and implement a skilled rapid response operation
  • Help maintain press lists and distribute materials
  • Proactively identify earned media opportunities for FFYF or early childhood education in general for national and other media markets in key Congressional districts
  • Assist the communications director with projects as necessary

  • Increased recognition of FFYF’s message, work and impact through press, media, and other communications outreach
  • Engaged new media opportunities that proliferate the successes and messaging of the organization and early childhood education in general
  • A more robust rapid response operation that will maintain early childhood education as a positive, bipartisan issue nationally
  • Increased strategic coverage among the national press of early childhood education, with a stronger understanding of the issue among national and political reporters
  • Management of communications requests from other FFYF departments and streamline coordination with other departments
  • A regularly updated website that highlights achievements by FFYF and elevates positive developments for early childhood education nationwide

Required Qualifications

Required qualifications to effectively perform the job. An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience will be considered. (Additional requirements may be designated by position.)

  • 4+ years of experience in communications, including external communications and crisis communications
  • Must have experience working directly with the media
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to think creatively and strategically as part of a team and within broad coalitions
