Director Of Communications
The Director of Communications is responsible for leading the planning, development and coordination of internal and external communications, communications-related events, outreach activities and products and media relations. The Director of Communications will report to the Vice President of Communications and Events and is accountable for the daily implementation of communication projects, using various tools to promote the mission and programs of the Foundation for the National Institutes of Health (FNIH).
The Director of Communications will be responsible for:
- leading the day-to-day operations of the Communications department;
- managing a growing communications team;
- developing and executing a multi-pronged communications strategy that amplifies the messages and information about the FNIH and its programs to enhance recognition and respect for the Foundation;
- developing announcements and press releases, working closely with FNIH staff and external partners to distill complex messages;
- managing content for FNIH communication channels as needed, including the website and the e-newsletter, as well as speaking remarks for FNIH spokespersons;
- managing the production of the Annual Report and other materials, as needed;
- overseeing the communications processes associated with the FNIH awards;
- building relationships and engaging with key stakeholders within the health and biomedical fields, as well as within the National Institute of Health communications community;
- leading an internship program and serving as manager of an intern for the department;
- proactively identifying communications opportunities, needs and story ideas;
- overseeing contracts with public relations and communications companies, in collaboration with the legal staff, to ensure that the FNIH receives the maximum benefit from those services;
- carrying out other duties as assigned.
A Bachelor’s degree in Communications or other relevant fields and eight to ten years of related professional experience is required.
The Director of Communications must have excellent writing and editing skills, a mastery of written and oral communications, a working knowledge of website and print material design principles, and an understanding of best practices and analytical methods in communications techniques. Skill in conveying complex biomedical information in lay language is essential. Supervisory experience is preferred.
The Director of Communications must be detail-oriented and able to manage multiple concurrent projects. Additionally, the Director of Communications must bring to the position a demonstrated ability to take initiative and interact with a variety of stakeholders as well as work at the strategic and tactical levels. The candidate must be someone who works well in a team environment but who can also operate independently.
