Capture the beauty of autumn light on canvas while painting in the historic village of Sandy Spring. Master plein air artist Valerie Craig will emphasize simplification and organization of shapes, use of color temperature, atmospheric perspective and the benefits of painting on location. Students will learn what to select and what to omit to create a strong design. Participants will receive lots of individual attention and direction. Painters may work in oil, acrylic or pastel and demonstrations will be offered in oil. Come with your plein air supplies, lunch and a drink. This is a two-day workshop, but you can sign up for one day if necessary.
Known for her impressionist approach to color and light, Craig’s subject matter includes urban and rural landscapes as well as intimate still life paintings, and figures within a landscape. Craig has had more than twenty years in the field to date, painting in both watercolor and oils. Like most artists, Craig continues to be a student of art, always reaching for a higher level of excellence, while discovering and expressing her own voice.
In order to focus on her own painting, Craig is hosting fewer workshops than in the past. You won’t want to miss this one. Registration is limited to 15 people.
Join museum staff for an introduction to historic medical illustrations from the museum’s Otis Historical Archives and try your hand at making illustrations, using pen and ink, of specimens and artifacts from the museum’s collections. Event is free but reservations are required. Call (301) 319-3312 to register or visit https://www.facebook.com/events/2546778318678027/ to learn more.
