Emerging Light: Paintings by Denise Dittmar & Students September 6 to October 6, 2019 // Park View Galley @ Park View Gallery at Glen Echo Park

Emerging Light features paintings by long-time Glen Echo Park instructor Denise Dittmar and her students from Emerging Young Artists at the Yellow Barn, Young Creative Spirit, & other classes. The paintings in this show are strongly influenced by artists who work with light, including the classic Impressionists, as well as Walt Bartman and John Murray at The Yellow Barn. The detailed brush strokes and vibrant colors emphasize movement in each painting. Audiences will appreciate the reverence for the Impressionist genre by Dittmar and her students. Visual Poetry: A Collaborative Exhibit of Image and Word September 6 to October 6, 2019 // Popcorn Galley @ Popcorn Gallery at Glen Echo Park

The Glen Echo Park Partnership presents Visual Poetry featuring the work of Photoworks artists who were challenged to ponder the poetry in their images and to assign words to the photographs they chose for this exhibition. Fourteen photographers, Photoworks faculty and students, have agreed to challenge their vision by exploring two creative art forms – images captured through a lens and words that can describe, challenge and illuminate. Photoworks is the resident digital and darkroom photography studio at Glen Echo Park. Observe a mix of images and words that immerse the audience in the photographers’ challenge. Guests can think, ponder, and write in the quiet space set aside for reflection. Art Walk and Opening Reception: Friday, September 6, 6 to 8pm

Line of Sight: Paintings by Rebecca Coffin Anderson Ceramics by Jennifer Quie Coffin @ Waverly Street Gallery

Line of Sight refers to the direction in which a person must look in order to see a particular object. This conjunction of ceramic and watercolor works explores the interplay between nearness and distance, drawing out the impact of direction, and perspective on perception. Jennifer Coffin’s ceramic elements present the detail, texture, and immediacy of form experienced in entering a landscape. Rebecca Anderson’s paintings layer the effects of distance and proximity with the sense of atmosphere and space in abstracted landscapes seen from above, close to the water’s edge, through a copse of trees, or from afar.

In this joint exhibition, proximity, vantage point, and aperture transform the viewer’s experience of materials, objects, and landscapes. Coffin’s clay bodies and Anderson’s paintings are formed from foraged and found organic matter and are reconstituted as abstracted landscapes. Dimension and topography emerge from fossilized shells, mineral clay and grapevine charcoal.

Freeze Frame: Ethan Rochmis September 6 to October 6, 2019 // Stone Tower Gallery @ Stone Gallery at Glen Echo Park

Freeze Frame is an exploration into the interplay between materials and their environment by mixed media artist Ethan Rochmis. The science-inspired work is composed using variations of natural environments paired with water, ink, and paper that lead to an infinite number of expressible realities. The artwork is what Rochmis calls “Ice Inks,” an original style that he has practiced for 3 years. In each environmental setting the frost translates its own character and affects the expression of the material. We are excited to debut Rochmis’ first exhibition in this unique style. Experience the phenomenon when ink meets ice. As a bonus, Rochmis will also display his burl bowl collection. Art Walk and Opening Reception: Friday, September 6, 6 to 8pm

Elizabeth Casqueiro: Ballyhoo @ BlackRock Center for the Arts

Elizabeth Casqueiro: Ballyhoo @ BlackRock Center for the Arts

Focused on the games, comics, and advertisements which influenced her while she was growing up in Portugal, Elizabeth Casqueiro pays tribute to the joy and passion they generated as well as their telescopic reach into adulthood. Viewing the works in her solo exhibition, Ballyhoo, we come to realize that her abstracted forms are both playful and serious, rendered in the colors of childhood yet shaped by the questioning of an adult mind wondering about innocence lost and asking the question “do we ever really grow up?”

Exciting superhero comic book narratives, with their simplistic dualities of good and evil, remind the artist of the shallow politics of today. The frantic search for advertised treasures in cereal boxes is no different than the quest for greener grass, the perfect bargain, a better standing. Rousing schoolyard games of marbles and jax speak to an all too familiar winner-takes-all market economy.

About the Artist: Elizabeth Casqueiro is a visual artist who was born in England, grew up in Portugal and came to live in the United States, first as a high school exchange student and later as a graduate student. The Washington, DC resident has exhibited her artwork regionally, nationally and internationally. Casqueiro earned a Master of International Business Management from the University of Westminster in London, a Master of Architecture from the Catholic University of America, and a BA in Design from Institute of Art and Design Instituto de Arte e Design in Lisbon, Portugal. Tom Greaves: Middlemost Daft @ BlackRock Center for the Arts
Sep 21 @ 2:00 pm – Nov 2 @ 5:00 pm
Tom Greaves: Middlemost Daft @ BlackRock Center for the Arts

In a series of assemblages depicting the middle of an unfinished short story, Tom Greaves challenges the viewer to question what is real and what is fake as we consider how our unintentional and perhaps unknown biases shape what we believe to be the truth. In sculptural constructions, from an ongoing series which began in 2016, the Washington, D.C. based artist arranges found and collected objects, images, textiles, plastics, paint and other media to capture frozen moments exploring social, political, economic, cultural, environmental, and other issues in scenes infused with a subversive sense of humor.
In his solo exhibition, Middlemost Daft, Greaves presents selections from three years of work which began as he was preparing to move his studio. Rather than pack up the many objects he had collected, for one reason or another over a period of many years, he started to arrange them in smaller boxes. Greaves was drawn toward the absurd in the creation of this work, likely a response to the changing cultural landscape which made him feel somewhat helpless against the lies, hatred and pettiness coming from those who lead and those who follow. Each piece portrays the turning point in a specific narrative which is meant to challenge our notions of what may or may not be true.

About the Artist: Tom Greaves is a native of Canton, Ohio who graduated from The Art Institute of Pittsburgh with a degree in Visual Communication and completed The Corcoran School of the Arts and Design curriculum for Advanced Figure Sculpture and Advanced Metal Sculpture. His 35-year career as a professional artist has included work in graphic design, illustration, drawing, painting, printmaking, and sculpture. Greaves lives in the Capitol Hill neighborhood of Washington, D.C., where he maintains his studio practice, and is currently a member of Sparkplug collective, a 2-year program sponsored by the District of Columbia Arts Center. He has exhibited his work regionally, nationally and internationally. To learn more about the artist, please visit his website:
