Meeting Their Match

Local couples share the (funny, touching, scary) stories of how they met

Love the Coat

“It was the coat,” Theresa Roden-Reynolds of Chevy Chase recalls. “The beautiful camel hair coat.” That’s what George Schu was wearing when she spotted him at Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament Church in Harrisburg, Pa. Theresa’s family was new to the area, and the pastor introduced her to George’s sister. She, in turn, introduced Theresa to her family. “By the time I met him on one of his visits home from college, I had earned something of a Good Housekeeping Seal of approval,” Theresa says. “Fortunately, when we met, we actually liked one another and we clearly had the support of our respective families.” After 41 years of marriage, the camel hair coat still hangs in the closet. “Who could part with that calling card?” she asks. George, 64, is a partner at Booz Allen Hamilton; Theresa, 62, is retired from federal government service. They have two children, ages 41 and 39, and three grandchildren, ages 10, 8 and 7.
