Meeting Their Match
Local couples share the (funny, touching, scary) stories of how they met
Banking on Love
Phil Tavolacci had just finished grad school in Richmond, Va., and was questioning his sexuality when he noticed an attractive teller at the bank he’d entered in Roanoke. He remembers thinking: If I’m going to pursue a relationship with a man, that’s who I would want to be with. “I started doing statistics in my head to determine how I could get up to his window from my place in the bank line,” he says. When he finally made it there, he and Jeff Coles felt an immediate connection. By pure coincidence, they bumped into each other at the mall the following day. “We hung out as friends—but our relationship quickly evolved,” says Phil, now 40 and owner of TAVO Total Health, a physical therapy, personal training and massage center in Chevy Chase. “And we’ve now been together for 14 years.” Jeff, 41, works at Wells Fargo. The couple lives in Rockville and is looking into the possibility of adoption or surrogacy.
