Mystery Solved: State Responsible for Rockville Pike Project that Snarled Traffic

SHA closed lanes to finish paving, lighting work

The confusion over who is responsible for the road work on northbound Rockville Pike, between Jones Bridge Road and Cedar Lane, has been resolved. It’s a State Highway Administration (SHA) project, and the work appears to be done.

On Wednesday, Bethesda Beat quoted a Bethesda-Chevy Chase Regional Services Center newsletter that said the utility work that was snarling traffic was part of a $110 million project to construct a pedestrian tunnel connecting the Medical Center Metro Station and the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center.

Later that day, however, Ken Hartman, the director of the regional services center, acknowledged that the roadwork had nothing to do with the tunnel and that he wasn’t sure who was responsible for it.

Spokespeople for Pepco and the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission said Wednesday the utilities weren’t involved with the work.

But Thursday afternoon, Phil Alperson, the county's Base Realignment and Closure coordinator, said the work was part of an SHA project. SHA spokesman Charlie Gischlar said Thursday SHA finishing pavement and lighting projects.

The work has snarled traffic, taking three lanes down to two and finally down to one.
