Purple Line Construction Focuses on Silver Spring This Month
Future light-rail stations to be built on Dale Drive and in Long Branch, Lyttonsville
Several projects are underway this month as part of the construction of the Purple Line, the planned 16-mile light-rail line with 21 stations that is set to connect Montgomery and Prince George’s counties by 2022.
According to the website for the Purple Line Transit Partners, the public-private partnership building the line, most of the September work is occurring in Silver Spring.
One project involves blasting a tunnel between Arliss and Plymouth Streets, which will connect the planned Long Branch and Manchester Place stations. The website states that blasting is occurring between 5 a.m. and 9 p.m., with 24-hour notice given to residents. Work is not being performed on weekends or holidays.
Closer to downtown Silver Spring, crews have been working on Saturdays to reconfigure the parking lot in front of Silver Spring International Middle School at the corner of Wayne Ave. and Dale Drive. This is near where the planned Dale Drive station will be located.
Somewhat to the east, work will continue on the Lyttonsville Place Bridge, closed in June. The bridge passes over the former Georgetown Branch Trail near Rosemary Hills-Lyttonsville Local Park and connects the neighborhood to Brookville Road. Crews are demolishing and reconstructing the bridge, which will be home to the Lyttonsville station. There will also be an adjacent maintenance facility for the Purple Line called Lyttonsville Yard. Construction on this part of the line is only occurring on Saturdays between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.
Meanwhile, work continues on the downtown Bethesda station, which will be the western terminus of the light-rail line. Crews are working on drilling a 150-foot elevator shaft to connect the planned station to the existing Metro Red Line station under Wisconsin Avenue. According to WTOP, tunnel blasting will get into full gear next month, with an expected completion in late 2019.
