School board to discuss policies, academic calendar on Tuesday

The Montgomery County Board of Education is scheduled on Tuesday to discuss several potential policy changes and continue its conversation about the 2020-21 academic calendar.

Up for discussion and possible action include changes to the school district’s school transfer policy. A school board committee has met several times to discuss the policy, which outlines under what circumstances a student may transfer to a county school different than the one they would attend based on school boundaries.

The board will also discuss a possible change to its policy that mandates that all schools be closed on Inauguration Day.

Separately, the board will continue discussions about the next school year’s academic calendar. Three potential calendar scenarios were released as drafts to receive public feedback in October.

MCPS Mental Health Fair on Saturday

Montgomery County Public Schools is hosting its annual Mental Health Fair from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday at Gaithersburg High School.

Workshops and resources will be available on topics ranging from stress management, social media use, LGBTQ issues and vaping.

Celeste Malone, associate professor and coordinator of the school psychology program at Howard University, will deliver the keynote address.

Free flu clinics for students next week

The Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services will conduct free injectable flu vaccine clinics from 1:30 to 4 p.m. on Tuesday for children 18 years old and younger.

The clinics will be held at John F. Kennedy, Northwest, and Rockville high schools. The clinics are free, but registration is required. Appointments can be made online or by calling 311.
