U.S. Rep. Jamie Raskin will give the keynote address at a virtual ceremony for The Universities at Shady Grove graduates on May 7.
This will be the second consecutive year the event will be held virtually due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The event will begin at 7 p.m. with a speech from Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan. It will be streamed on the college’s Facebook and YouTube pages.
Other speakers include USG Executive Director Anne Khademian and four graduating students. Raskin, a Takoma Park resident who gained international attention this year as impeachment manager in a trial against former President Donald Trump, will be the keynote speaker.
The Universities at Shady Grove — a University System of Maryland campus in Montgomery County — will recognize more than 1,000 students during the ceremony.
“Although we’d all love to be in person to honor the accomplishments of all of these amazing students representing the nine universities with degree programs at USG, this year’s graduating class is quite special and this virtual celebration will be a fitting tribute,” Khademian said in a news release. “Not even a pandemic could stop them from achieving their goals. We could not be prouder of their accomplishments and their tenacity, and we know they are bound for many more great accomplishments ahead.”
The graduation celebration is not a commencement. Students get their degrees directly from the institution in which they were enrolled, not from The Universities at Shady Grove.
