The Montgomery County school board on Tuesday picked the principal of Earle B. Wood Middle School in Rockville to lead the new middle school in the Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School cluster that’s set to open in August 2017 in Kensington.

Traci Townsend has worked for Montgomery County Public Schools for 27 years as a teacher, assistant principal and principal, Superintendent Jack Smith told the board. He said Townsend has created a “well-run, learning-focused” environment at Earle B. Wood and expressed confidence that she’d do the same for Bethesda/Chevy Chase #2 Middle School on Saul Road.

“They’re really getting a superstar,” school board President Michael Durso said. “B-CC Middle School just won the lottery.”

Townsend started her MCPS career as a biology teacher in Gaithersburg High School, where she later spent six years as assistant principal. She moved on to become assistant principal at Earle B. Wood and was promoted in 2013 to be the school’s principal.
