A Montgomery Blair High School senior died on Monday, according to the school’s principal.

Moses Hailom, 18, of Silver Spring, was “smart, quiet, gentle and kind,” a message to families from Blair Principal Renay Johnson said.

Her message does not disclose how Hailom died. A school system spokesman and family members could not be reached for comment Wednesday morning.

“We are all devastated by this news,” Johnson’s letter said. “The loss of a student is always tragic and difficult to accept.”

Counselors are available for Blair students this week.

An online fundraising page raised more than $1,000 in 12 hours to cover funeral expenses. The page says Hailom had recently celebrated his birthday.

The teen enjoyed reading and “believed that books could open new worlds for young people,” the fundraising page says.

He was a member of the Park Montgomery after-school program and dreamed of building a small library.

Details about Hailom’s funeral arrangements were not available Wednesday.
