Montgomery County Public Schools leaders told the school board on Tuesday that instead of traditional, indoor ceremonies they are planning for outdoor graduations at high schools’ athletic stadiums.
If a school does not have a stadium that can accommodate physical distancing or other requirements, the event will be held at an alternate outdoor venue. Schools will also devise an inclement weather plan.
Since January, MCPS has been preparing for the possibility of traditional indoor graduation ceremonies. Tentative dates and locations had been set and announced.
But as the COVID-19 pandemic continues, the district is now planning to hold ceremonies outdoors.
A decision about whether health conditions warrant a virtual ceremony instead will be made by the end of April.
