Maryland’s Second JA Finance Park To Open Tuesday in Silver Spring School
Center at Thomas Edison High School of Technology serves as simulation of personal finance decisions
The Junior Achievement Finance Park, located on the third floor of the Thomas Edison High School of Technology, will officially open Tuesday with a 3 p.m. ceremony.
Less than a week after the ribbon cutting for the Thomas Edison High School of Technology, the school will be highlighted again this week as a key feature of the technical school holds its grand opening.
The Junior Achievement Finance Park, located on the third floor of the high school, will officially open Tuesday with a 3 p.m. ceremony.
The Thomas Edison location is the second JA Finance Park in Maryland; the other is in Prince George’s County.
The 25,000-square-foot center serves as a simulation of personal finance decisions, thrusting middle school-aged students into the “real world,” if only for a few hours. Students will make decisions such as selecting a health care provider, purchasing a car, balancing a budget and buying a home.
More than 12,000 Montgomery County Public Schools students will visit the center each year, experiencing the “challenges of making real-life financial decisions,” according to a press release. Each session is led by community volunteers and each of the more than 15 storefronts is sponsored by a local business, outfitted to look and feel like a real store.
