A Montgomery County man is in custody following a shooting in Kensington Tuesday night that left a woman dead after an argument, police said.

Alejandro Jose Perez de Leon, 48, of Kensington, has been charged with first-degree murder.

County police officers responded to 10724 Shaftsbury Street, off Plyers Mill Road, at around 9:59 p.m. for the report of a shooting, police said.

Perez de Leon had a domestic-related argument with the victim, Silvia Elenia Fernandez, 33, at some point during the evening, police said. He then shot and killed Fernandez, authorities said.

Perez de Leon remained on the scene and was taken into custody, police said. A handgun was found near Fernandez.

Perez de Leon and Fernandez were living together in a basement apartment at the house, according to police.

Perez de Leon is being held in a county detention center without bond. Attorney information was not available in online records as of Wednesday morning.
