A 26-year-old Kensington woman has been charged with murdering her 92-year-old roommate.

Julia Birch is accused of killing Nancy Ann Frankel in a home on Spruell Drive, Montgomery County police said in a press release Wednesday.

Police were called to the home around 8:20 a.m. Wednesday. When officers arrived, Birch told them she killed Frankel, according to police.

Officers found Frankel’s body inside the home and recovered evidence that “supported Birch’s statement,” police said. Birch was arrested and taken to police headquarters for questioning.

Birch told officers during the interview that she killed Frankel, then called 911, police said.

Birch has been charged with one count of first-degree murder and is due to appear in court Aug. 27, according to court records. Attorney information was not listed Wednesday evening.

An autopsy is scheduled for Thursday to determine how Frankel died, police said.
