A man and a woman are dead and three people, including a 22-year-old woman and two juveniles believed to be immediate family members, are in critical condition after an apparent murder-suicide in a Silver Spring home that happened sometime around midnight Sunday.

Montgomery County police responded to a call for multiple gunshots within a residence on Amberleigh Drive at 12:06 a.m. Monday.

“Five individuals, who investigators believe are family members were located,” a police press release said. “A 57-year-old male and a 48-year-old female succumbed to their injuries on the scene. A 22-year-old female and two juveniles, suffering from apparent gunshot wounds, were transported to local trauma centers and remain in critical condition.”

Police said investigators have preliminarily concluded the shooting is a domestic-related event.

A neighbor who lives a few doors  away said Monday morning the mother and children who live in the home walk around the neighborhood frequently and the children have trick-or-treated at her house before.

“I never see the father walking with them,” said the woman, who declined to give her full name.

Ana Magallanes, 33, who has lived with her family in the neighborhood collectively for 19 years, said the incident is unusual for the quiet neighborhood.

“I walk my dog at 5 o’clock in the morning,” Magallanes said. “It’s peaceful here.

Another neighbor, Moira Sanders, 32, said she’s seen the children who live at the house playing outside and they appear to be elementary school-aged.

“I would not have thought something like this would happen here,” Sanders, a mother of four, said. “It’s quiet here.”

Police said they will release more information as it becomes available.
