Two cats, dog killed by fire in Derwood

One dog saved; four people displaced

A fire at an apartment complex in Derwood killed two cats and a dog Tuesday morning, according to a Montgomery County Fire & Rescue official.

The fire happened around 9 a.m. at the Mallard Cove apartments at 8111 Needwood Road, Fire & Rescue spokesman Pete Piringer posted on Twitter.

Piringer wrote that firefighters found two small dogs that were unconscious in a third-floor apartment. One of the dogs died. The other was resuscitated and taken to a veterinarian.

In another post, Piringer wrote that two cats had died. Additionally, two adults and two children were displaced by the fire.

Piringer wrote that the fire appears to have started at an outlet where a kitchen appliance was plugged in. The fire caused more than $125,000 in damage, he wrote.
