An armed security officer shot and killed a customer at a downtown Silver Spring 7-Eleven early Sunday after a dispute broke out between a store clerk and the customer over a purchase. The customer was not armed with a gun or any other weapon, a Montgomery County police spokesperson said Monday.

According to a police press release, officers arrived at the 7-Eleven store at 8202 Georgia Ave at 3:52 a.m. Sunday in response to a report of an assault in progress.

Police found an unresponsive male, identified as 27-year-old Deon Christopher McDonald of Hyattsville, outside the store suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. Despite efforts by police who began life-saving techniques, McDonald was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

According to police accounts, McDonald was purchasing an item inside the 7-Eleven when a dispute between McDonald and the clerk erupted during the transaction. The security guard, who was working for the store’s property manager, intervened.

A physical altercation between McDonald and the guard, 44, broke out and continued outside of the store, where the guard discharged his handgun, striking McDonald. Police did not release the identity of the security guard or the company he worked for.

Detectives from the Major Crimes Division will continue to investigate the homicide and will coordinate with the Montgomery County State’s Attorney’s Office in Rockville, according to police.

Anyone with information about the event is asked to call 240-773-5070.
