Police identify man charged with killing man in Wheaton

Police said suspect assaulted victim with a baseball bat and knife

Montgomery County police have identified a man charged with killing a man on Friday in Wheaton.

Police said in a press release that Jose Lara-Chacon, 24, assaulted the man with a knife and a baseball bat in an apartment in the 12000 block of Veirs Mill Road on Friday.

Police said they were called to the scene around 9:32 p.m. on Friday. Officers found the victim dead and with an “apparent cutting injury” on his neck, police said. Lara-Chacon, who was in the apartment, was arrested and charged with first-degree murder.

Police said the victim and suspect were “acquaintances.”

Police had posted a message about the victim’s death on Twitter Friday evening, but provided little information. In another post Saturday morning, police wrote that someone had been arrested but did not immediately identify the suspect.

The victim’s body has been taken to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, where it will be identified and an autopsy will be conducted to determine the cause of death, police said.

Police are asking anyone with information to call them at 240-773-5070.
