Maryland State police have identified a driver who was hit after he got out of his vehicle on Interstate 270 in Bethesda and was standing near it early Monday morning.

Lloyd A. Gardiner, 57, of Silver Spring, was driving north on I-270 near the Rockledge Drive overpass just before 12:40 a.m., police said in a press release.

Police said that after Gardiner’s vehicle crashed, he stopped in the travel portion of the road and got out.

Gardiner was standing in front of his vehicle when a second vehicle hit his vehicle, pushing it into him, police said.

The driver of the second vehicle stayed at the scene, police said.

Gardiner was pronounced dead at the scene. His body was taken to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for an autopsy.

Police initially released information about the fatal crash early on Monday, but did not identify Gardiner.
