An 81-year-old woman was killed Monday night as she tried to cross University Boulevard in Silver Spring, according to Montgomery County police.

At approximately 6:45 p.m., Rita Jo Sultan, of Silver Spring, was hit by a United States Postal Service mail truck in the 1100 block of University Boulevard. She died at the scene, police said.

The mail truck was driven by 57-year-old Thanh Van Cao of Gaithersburg, who was uninjured in the crash. The crash occurred near the Warwick Apartments and Northwood High School.

Montgomery County Police spokesman Capt. Tom Jordan said investigators are working to confirm whether Sultan was in the road or using a cross walk at the time of the crash.
