Damion Callery Jr. was shot and killed on Aug. 17.

A recent Paint Branch High School graduate was shot and killed on Saturday in the backyard of his Fairland residence, county police said.

County police officers responded to the 14100 block of Angelton Terrace around 3:43 a.m. Aug. 17 for the report of a shooting. Officers found Damion Callery Jr., 18, dead in the home.

Detectives determined Calley encountered an armed person or persons in his backyard and was shot, police said. As of Monday morning, they were still trying to find the shooter.

The Washington Post reported Callery was supposed to start school soon at Bowie State University.

The family is raising money on a GoFundMe page to cover funeral expenses.

The residence is across the street from Fairland Regional Park, near Burtonsville.

Callery’s body was taken to the state Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for an autopsy.

Callery graduated from Paint Branch in May.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the Callery family,” the school’s Twitter account dedicated to athletics posted on Sunday. “Panthers continue to support each other!”
