Montgomery County police Monday charged a county firefighter with assault and sexual offenses stemming from an incident that occurred in July while he provided treatment to a victim.

Mario Arturo Obando-Rodriguez, 33, of the 7400 block of Brenish Drive in Gaithersburg, allegedly touched a female victim inappropriately under the pretense of providing medical assistance in a Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services (MCFRS) ambulance going to a local hospital, police said. He then gave his phone number to the victim.

Obando-Rodriguez was arrested on Friday and charged with one count of second-degree assault and three counts of fourth-degree sexual offenses. He was taken to the Central Processing Unit and released the same day after posting a $5,000 bond, police said.

MCFRS spokesman Pete Piringer said Obando-Rodriguez has been “removed from operational status.”

The suspect has been with MCFRS since 2013. The incident allegedly occurred on July 3. Obando-Rodriguez was stationed at Fire Station 8 in Gaithersburg at the time of the incident, according to police.
