A man drowned in the Potomac River last week, Montgomery County police said on Friday.

Franky Smith Gonzales Sapaico, 26, of Springfield, Va., was swimming in the river just outside the Beltway last Monday when he went underwater and didn’t resurface, police said in a press release. His disappearance was reported to police around 8 p.m. that night.

Police officers and Montgomery County Fire & Rescue crew members searched for Sapaico until Thursday night, police said.

Sapaico’s family members found his body around 5 p.m. on Friday near Scott’s Run, police said. Officers then responded to the scene.

No foul play is suspected in Sapaico’s death, police spokesman Officer Rick Goodale said on Saturday. Montgomery County search and rescue personnel did the search because Maryland has jurisdiction over the river, he said.
