Montgomery County police arrested a Prince George’s County man during a traffic stop early Saturday in Silver Spring after they allegedly found him with a loaded handgun.

Kejuan Pope, 19, of Upper Marlboro was stopped in his Honda Accord around 12:38 a.m. Saturday near the intersection of Georgia and Thayer avenues, police wrote in a press release Tuesday. The area is in downtown Silver Spring.

According to police, the officer found a handgun and 50-round drum magazine under the driver’s seat. They later discovered it was loaded.

The officer asked Pope to put his hands on the steering wheel, and when backup arrived, Pope was arrested.

Police wrote that they also found marijuana in Pope’s car and he was driving with a suspended license.

The traffic stop was conducted by a member of the police’s holiday task force, which aims to crack down on alcohol-related offenses.

Pope is charged with possession of a firearm by a person under 21, possession of a controlled dangerous substance and driving on a suspended driver’s license, among other offenses, police said.

He is scheduled to appear in district court Jan. 9, according to state court records. Attorney information was not listed Wednesday morning.
