An elderly driver who was seriously injured Dec. 5 when her car crashed into a tree in Bethesda died Friday morning, Montgomery County police said.

Audrey Sloope Bell, 93, of the 8000 block of Whittier Boulevard, was the sole occupant of the 2003 Buick Century that crashed into a tree at 8015 Whittier Blvd., police said. At about 9 a.m., she was made a left turn from eastbound Whittier Court onto northbound Whittier Boulevard, police said. The car left the roadway and hit the tree, police said.

A police press release said officers do not know why Bell drove off the road.

After hitting the tree, the car rolled onto the driver’s side, police said. Bell, who had to be extricated from the Buick, suffered extensive injuries and was taken to an area hospital, where she later died from her injuries, police said. The location of the wreck is next to Thomas S. Pyle Middle School and Landon School.

The crash remains under investigation. Police ask anyone with information to contact the Collision Reconstruction Unit at 240-773-6620.
