Seeking highway project ‘revote,’ Hogan power play sways leaders in some counties

Efforts to revive a beleaguered highway project in Montgomery County took a step forward on Tuesday, when Frederick County Executive Jan H. Gardner appointed herself to a regional panel that plays a key role in transportation projects, replacing County Council Member Kai Hagen.

Hagen previously sided with Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich on a resolution to remove the proposed widening of Interstate 270 and the Capital Beltway from a list of projects to be included in a crucial federal air quality analysis. [Maryland Matters]

Structural engineers deployed to Surfside condo collapse

Two Montgomery County structural engineers were sent to Florida to help with the Surfside building collapse.

The two structural engineers are from Maryland Task Force 1’s specialized search and rescue team. [WDVM]

Whitman students’ rocket soars to second place in national contest

Four Walt Whitman High School students earned second place in a national rocketry contest in which 615 teams entered.

The students missed top honors in the 2021 American Rocketry Challenge by as small as one-tenth of a second in the rocket’s ascent or descent or less than a foot in its top altitude. [Montgomery Community Media]

Fire breaks out at auto recycling facility

Montgomery County Fire and Rescue responded around 4 p.m. Tuesday on Southlawn Lane in Rockville to find cars, tires, and a partial storage building on fire.

Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Chief Scott Goldstein said the building is an auto recycling facility where crews were removing a car from a trailer when the fire began. [WDVM]
