Rare visit from brilliantly colored bird draws crowds

In drizzling rain and near-freezing temperatures, birders arrived before the sun rose, as soon as the gates to the park on the Maryland side of Great Falls had opened.

They came to see a male painted bunting, a bird known for its kaleidoscope of colors — blue heads, red underparts, and green backs. It’s a bird commonly seen in Florida and other parts of the South but rarely in Maryland. [Washington Post]

Construction underway for $10M downtown Silver Spring renovation

Despite changes due to the pandemic, downtown Silver Spring has now started working on its $10 million renovation plan for a new look.

The makeover will include murals, a new plaza area, public art, and greenspace. [WDVM]

Police make 25 DUI arrests in sixth round of 2020-21 alcohol crackdown

Police across Montgomery County arrested and charged 25 people with driving under the influence during the sixth round of the county’s alcohol holiday task force, authorities said.

The Montgomery County Police Alcohol Holiday Task Force, which cracks down on alcohol-related offenses, began its work on Nov. 18, 2020, and will continue through Jan. 9, 2021. [Patch]
