Methodist Church calls for release of Silver Spring man arrested by ICE

United Methodist Church leaders called for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to release a Silver Spring man who they said was arrested illegally from his home on the grounds of the Glenmont United Methodist Church.

They also called on ICE to state publicly that it will uphold its policy of not entering sensitive locations, which includes “churches, synagogues, mosques or other institutions of worship, such as buildings rented for the purpose of religious services,” according to an ICE 2011 memorandum. County estimates 20,000 tenant units are delinquent on rent

The Montgomery County Department of Housing and Community Affairs (DHCA) estimates about 15% of rental households, or 20,000 units, are failing to pay rent.

There are 130,000 rental units in the county, said Aseem Nigam, director of the DHCA. [Montgomery Community Media]

County’s former environmental protection head dies in car crash

Lisa Feldt, a former EPA administrator who once led Montgomery County’s environmental protection department, died Thursday in a car crash in Anne Arundel County. She was 60. 

Feldt’s career in the environmental field spanned more than 30 years and included several stints at the EPA before she came to Montgomery County to serve as DEP director in 2015. [Patch]

Microsoft to buy Bethesda in $7.5 billion deal

In what is set to be one of the largest ever acquisitions in the video game industry, Microsoft announced Monday that it has reached a deal to acquire ZeniMax Media, the parent company of popular video game publisher Bethesda Softworks, for $7.5 billion.

Once the deal is finalized, Bethesda properties including The Elder Scrolls, Fallout, Wolfenstein, Quake, Starfield and DOOM will be owned by Microsoft. [NPR]
