Man on I-270 Struck by Dump Truck, Fatally Injured
State police investigating why man was crossing highway near Germantown
A Germantown man died after he was hit by a dump truck while crossing Interstate 270 near Germantown Monday afternoon, state police announced Tuesday.
Investigators have not said why Tyrone Alonzo Jones, 36, was in a middle northbound lane of the six-lane highway near Route 118 when he was struck.
State police said they received a call at 12:15 p.m. reporting a person in the roadway, which has a 55 mph speed limit in the area, and while troopers were on the way to investigate, they received another call that a pedestrian had been struck.
Jones was taken to MedStar Washington Hospital Center in critical condition and was pronounced dead at 1:16 p.m., according to police.
Police said the driver of the Mack dump truck stayed at the scene while police investigated and checked the vehicle.
Since January, more than three dozen pedestrians have been struck and injured, three fatally, in the county, according to the county’s crash reporting database.
