County Council to discuss accessory dwelling units Tuesday

The Montgomery County Council will hold a work session at its meeting Tuesday morning on accessory dwelling units (ADUs), which are also called in-law apartments. The discussion will focus on legislation, proposed by Council Member Hans Riemer that would allow ADUs in three additional residential zones, while capping the size to 1,200 square feet or 10% of the size of the property. County Executive Marc Elrich has opposed the idea on the grounds that it could increase traffic, contribute to school crowding and create aesthetic problems such as additional storm water runoff. The meeting begins at 9:30 a.m. in the council’s Rockville chamber, located at 100 Maryland Ave.

County to hold forum on racial equity Wednesday

Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich and County Council President Nancy Navarro will host a forum on racial equity Wednesday at the White Oak Community Recreation Center in Silver Spring. The forum follows similar discussions that were held earlier this year in Silver Spring and Germantown, and are aimed at gathering comments from the public on how the county can implement a racial equity policy that will affect decisions on such issues as transportation, education, policing and housing. The meeting begins at 7 p.m. and the center is located at 1700 April Lane.

School board to meet Thursday

The Montgomery County Board of Education will discuss substitute teacher qualifications, restorative justice discipline practices and procurement contracts of more than $25,000 at its meeting Thursday. The public portion of the meeting begins at 11 a.m. and will be held at the board’s Rockville headquarters, located at 850 Hungerford Drive.

Four northbound lanes on I-270 to be closed during nights through July 17 for repaving

The Maryland State Highway Administration closed the two right express lanes and two local lanes Sunday night on northbound I-270 between the Beltway and West Montgomery Ave exits to complete paving work. The lanes will be closed between 10 p.m. and 4 a.m. through July 17. In addition to the lane closures, the northbound ramps for the Montrose Road and Falls Road exits will be closed, with detours in place.
